I just subscribed to RealOne Rhapsody and want to find some albums that have some of the better representations of Vinnie's playing. I searched the internet but he's done so much... can anyone narrow it down for me? I'm aware of everything listed on Steve's site. Are there any suggestions, not just on soloing but also on good tasty groove playing?
Also, how do I purchase the Chick Corea Alive VHS that is supposed to be available? And is the Chick Corea Live at the Blue Note in Tokyo VHS available other than in bootleg? Thanks!

Most of what I recommend is what most others here would say as well.
I think we can all agree on the following:
1) Karizma - Document
2) Frank Zappa - Joe's Garage
3) Alan Holdsworth - Secrets
4) Buell Neidlinger Quartet - Big Drum (many will disagree, but Vin's playing is just plain awesome on this recording)
5) Sting - Ten Summoner's Tales
I feel that those would be a great start, and I don't think I'd get too many arguments from the other regulars here.

In addition to Plaid's list I'd add the Cavemen and Randy Waldman CDs.

Cavemen?
I didn't care for that CD really.
I've been listening to BIG DRUM for a while now and that recording is ridiculous. The music on there is SO out, and Vinnie sounds great.

There's always Live Baked Potato 2000, if you don't mind listening to Abe solo...

Believe me, Derek, I totally understand not liking the tunes themselves. Some of them (as others have said) are downright awful sounding, but as long as you tune out the sax, upright, and trumpet, you're ok!

I haven't heard it yet (but I special ordered it via FYE), but I heard the Kimo Williams CD is ridiculous, too... called Tracking.

"Tracking", by Kimo, is a good one.

In addition to those above.....
Vinnie Colaiuta - Debut Album
Zappa - Saarbrucken 78
Brandon Fields - Other places (only two tracks on this one but VC shines..However Porcaro,Vega,Mason Bretchlien(sp) and Acuna shine on this disk as well....)
Tom Scott - Flashpoint (VC's playing here is mostly on the super ultra-slinky funky contemporary jazz tip...But he does strecth big out on a few choice places on this disk.)
Bunny Brunel's - Dedication (straight-ahead)
Quincy Jones/Sammy Nestico Big Band - From Basie and Beyond
PS Has Anyone here heard the Warren Cuccurullo CD entitled "Thanks to Frank"??
